It was another busy few weeks since the car started. I have ordered lots of parts and started adding them to the car. Unfortunately, again I did not do a great job photographing the work.
Replaced the thermostat and gasket
Replaced coolant hoses, filled with new coolant, replaced radiator cap.
Brakes / Front Wheel Bearings
Removed the master cylinder and hoses. Blew lines clean with compressed air
New brake master, bench bled with Dot 5 hydraulic fluid and installed
New Rotors and pads
Packed new front wheel bearings, installed with fresh seals.
Drums checked out fine. Installed new shoes and, wheel cylinders, and parking brake boots.
One wheel cylinder where the parking lever attaches was bent on arrival. When I tried to bend it back the casting snapped. The company shipped me a new one.
I struggled with the fitting kits (thin pieces of metal flying in the garage). I finally got the wheel cylinders mounted and they were locked in tight. These were really different than the MGB.... It seemed as though the arrangement would only push on one shoe as the cylinder seemed fixed. When I reached out for help on the Triumph Experience, I learned that the wheel cylinder is supposed to slide in the track applying pressure to both shoes. I had installed the fitting kit wrong. I disassembled and put it back together correctly.
Replaced all brake hoses.
Gravity bled system with Dot 5 hydraulic fluid
reset shuttle valve
Clutch Hydraulics
Removed the master and slave cylinder and hoses. Blew the line clean with compressed air.
New clutch master, bench bled with Dot 5 hydraulic fluid, and installed
New clutch hose
New clutch clevis, pushrod and slave cylinder mounted with the valve up
Gravity fed system with Dot 5 hydraulic fluid
This where things went a little pear-shaped
I decided to test the clutch with the newly installed system. With the car up on jack stands, running, with the clutch in, the rear hubs still rigorously spun.
I bled again with no further success
I read online that sometimes when cars sit for years like this one, sometimes the clutch disc gets stuck the flywheel and or pressure plate.
I disconnected the ignition and I called my friend Rob over. He sat in the driver's seat with his daughter on his lap (see pics) and cranked the motor in first gear while I held the rear hub with a bar between the wheel studs. I've been told since this was UNBELIVEABLY STUPID and I could have gotten really hurt by all the torque being generated. The correct method was to do this with the wheels on the ground using the motor and 4th gear.
Luckily, no injuries sustained, the hubs began to spin independently of the motor cranking.
Engine running, tested the transmission in all 4 forward gears, Overdrive for 3/4, and reverse. All seemed okay.
Reattached carburetor linkage to rear carb.
Installed new air filters
Installed a battery hold down assembly. This didn't quite fit right as the side terminals on the battery interfered with the bracket pushing on the battery at the correct angle and potentially could cause a short between the posts. I ended up grinding part of the bracket away. It still does not sit right and it really does not apply pressure correctly to actually hold the battery down.
Installed new hood buffers, hood pins, and hood seal
Replaced the speedo cable and angle drive
The front lugs on the passenger front hub were extremely worn. It looked like the wheel had been loose and rubbed the threads bare. I pressed them out and pressed in new ones from Moss. I replaced some of the lug nuts and plastic washers as well as one was cracked, and others were pitted.
Installed new Trailing arm and body rebound buffers
Replaced dashpot cover screws with correct pozi-drive screws
Replaced Wiper Blades
Replaced license plate lamp gasket, cleaned lamp lenses, replaced one of the attachment to bumper screws. The PO must have broken the fixed nut as it was held on with a regular nut.
Corrected reverse light wiring
Corrected brake light wiring
Bulbs
Removed, disassembled, cleaned, reassembled, tested, and reinstalled hazard switch.
Gapped and Installed new Bosch Super Plus spark plugs
retested compression dry, applied seafoam to 2 and 5, charging battery
pull and test ammeter
change spark plugs new plud gapped
dizzy cap and rotor
ignition lamp
hazard switch rebuild
head nut
front license plate
